HEALTH & SAFETY COMPUTER DIARY TAKES AWAY LEGAL HEADACHES

An innovative computerised diary system, which enables bodyshops to record important health & safety checks, ensuring they meet their legal obligations, is being introduced by Brown Brothers, part of the Unipart Group of Companies.

The HS Diary, the health & safety IT organiser, prompts bodyshops to perform relevant health & safety checks on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis such as completing VOC reports and checking fire exits and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It then records that the tasks have been undertaken, generating the evidence required by the health & safety inspectorate to ensure bodyshops are compliant.

The software has been designed by Brown Brothers in conjunction with Howard Basford, which trialed the system at its site in Crewe. It was the first time the bodyshop network had been able to computerise health & safety, EPA and environmental issues in one diary. Stewart Dale, regional internal controls manager, Howard Basford says: "We were operating our own system designed specifically for Howard Basford, however, by working in partnership with Brown Brothers we have been able to share information and best practice to develop a more comprehensive package. We are particularly impressed with the source documentation behind the computerised diary, which provides check sheets to ensure our business meets all the required health and safety compliance."

HS Diary is installed free of charge onto any computer system and for a yearly subscription of £300, regular updates highlighting changes in legislation are supplied. In addition, the system indicates areas where bodyshops may require specialist assistance such as occupational health surveillance and specialised risk assessments.
